How to Make a Chalkboard Mug

By laurathegentleman

Ever needed a way to remember whose cup was whose? Or a way to decorate your coffeemug with JUST the quote you needed to hear in the morning? Or maybe a way to leave a message of "I Love You" to your wife when you bring her morning coffee to her? One of the homemade gifts that I learned how to make this year were adorable little chalkboard mugs - painted with special chalkboard paint so that you can write on them. They are both useful AND cute - a perfect blend of fun and function.

An added bonus is that they aren't hard to make, nor are they particularly expensive. Buying a mug like this online or from a quirky store like Urban Outfitters would cost nearly $20, but you can make your own for less than $5 apiece.

Materials:
- Porcelain mug (you can sometimes find these at the dollar store, but the higher the quality the better!)
- Painter's tape (or masking tape)
- Paintbrush
- Porcelain Chalkboard Paint (I used Pebeo Porcelaine 150 Chalkboard Paint - which I purchased from Amazon.com)

My mugs turned out great - I made a few for friends, and a few for myself!
My mugs turned out great - I made a few for friends, and a few for myself!

How To Do It:

1. Using painter's tape (or masking tape,) cordon off the area of the mug that you don't want to paint. (If you prefer, you can paint the entire mug, or you can get fancy and mark off specific areas of the mug. I've seen people paint chalkboard faces, cool shapes, stripes - all sorts of things.) For mine, I was simple and just painted the bottom half of the mug.

2. Paint away! Paint an even coat that covers the sides of the mug - depending on how much of the mug you intend to paint, you might consider painting the bottom and letting it dry upside down. If you make a mistake, it should come off with a damp paper towel.

3. Remove the tape as soon as you have finished painting, to prevent the edges of the paint from peeling when the tape is peeled off. Be very careful not to smudge, especially around the line where the paint stops!

4. Let the paint dry for an entire day (24 hours). Then you can bake your mug to set the chalkboard paint. The directions for baking will vary depending on what brand of chalkboard paint you used. Once the mug has finished in the oven, it will be dishwasher safe, as well as safe to use in the microwave.

5. Decorate! Grab some chalk and draw all over! Or give it as a gift - include some pieces of chalk in your mug and wrap it up for a friend!

Great idea! I'd just suggest that you move the Google ad down and the the pic of the project up. I was totally confused to s an add for a tiled shower when I first opened up the article.
